It takes a lot of effort to talk to anyone who does not understand ADHD and I believe, there are a lot of people today who don’t know how severe ADHD can be. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a condition where a person struggles with focusing and. It includes trouble in organizing thoughts, difficulty in listening, talking too much, and unstable mood swings. In my case, I realized its not my zodiac sign but my mental state which was deteriorating every single day. Emotions can be very intense and trouble managing emotions is one of the common signs today (Sources)
While I am writing this, I’m still going through one of the suffocating moodiness and lately, it has been very bad. I realized, how I am too much focused on what I feel, and at the same time, I want to avoid it by working too much and sleeping too little.
In this blog, I am not only going to talk about ADHD symptoms but how they affected my career, my personal life, and what you should do if you are going through it.
What is ADHD?
Where Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is common in kids, it is also affecting adults as well. One thing is that in children’s you can recognize and it is noticeable whereas it can start from early childhood and continue to adulthood. In adults, hyperactivity may not be there or decreased but they struggle with impulsiveness, restlessness, difficulty in paying attention, which can affect their daily functioning.
Symptoms can be – Trouble focusing, missing deadlines, forgetting about meetings or tasks too much, frequent mood swings, trouble coping with stress, bad temper, and one more thing which makes ADHD in adults the worst that the adults who have ADHD will at least have another mental condition as well. Like, in my case – It is anxiety.
What causes ADHD?
During my research related to my condition and while writing this article, I checked about what causes ADHD? Nobody knows exactly what causes this situation and scientists are still figuring it out. But based on researches, scientists think that genes or personal environment can affect the mental state.
My Story about ADHD
So, when I got diagnosed with ADHD the first thing my friend who doesn’t believe in such a condition said was, “You don’t need a therapist – just need to focus more on your work.”
The problem is not focusing or not that we are not trying. It is not a willpower problem but it’s essentially a chemical problem in the management system of one’s brain. It is not the issue that one can not focus on but an overwhelming feeling where my brain screams at me that I have to complete a certain task but I just can’t and it is suffocating. These days, when I am not willing to go to therapy or anything I am facing issues on completing certain tasks or keep forgetting about a certain task or ignoring what needs to be done. In return, I had to leave a project because I was making mistakes and it was ruining my image. That’s when I realized how much control ADHD has over my life.
People may call me moody but there are certain times when I don’t want to interact or find home suffocating. Where I don’t want to do some task because it feels boring and overwhelming, where I just shout at people for no reason. At last, In the way of figuring out what needs to be done – I decided to stop socializing at all. A decision which I never wanted yet I did because that’s how I am functioning.
Talk to a Therapist
People may say that therapy won’t help but it’s the only solution. People may call you lazy and stupid because of how you keep forgetting the task but if ADHD is undiagnosed and untreated it can affect you a lot. If you have any symptoms – speak to the professionals about them and learn how you can control your behaviour, manage stress, anger and how you can communicate clearly. It’s time when you need to focus on yourself.
Thank you for sharing this heartfelt and true side of yourself. While living with a sort of disorder is difficult, we can all rise above it with better understanding and empathy.
Consulting to a professional will always be the best advice given out there, but it’s sympathy that could bring change to people who struggle with such illness. We must learn to combat the stigma and never make them feel they’re different.
I don’t appreciate it when people mention ADHD and OCD lightly in our day to day without really understanding the implication of both these mental illnesses….
